Artist’s Statement

The experience of my immediate environment, both tangible and intangible – the cities I have lived in and the act of negotiating these spaces, weaves itself in to my work. These narratives are expressed in multiple layers in my paintings allowing me to juxtapose various experiences from different time frames

The lines between what is personal and political blur. I could be one of  many, or many could be me. Personal space has been subverted by the political, my art cannot but embody it.

Creating patterns and ornamentation remain an integral part of my work.Transcending their decorative value, patterns, which were traditionally relegated to the margins wrest center space in my work to set up semantic paradoxes that play through the narrative.Instead of mere decoration, patterns and motifs in my work become the discourse of conflict, instead of creating harmony they emphasize menace.I use repetition in order to camouflage my images so that they don’t become too didactic and at the same time demand a certain intimacy from the viewer in order to be able to decipher and interpret. Repetition of a form over and over again enables me to emphasize the image as well as render it a meditative and cathartic act.
